Book Review: Scarlet

The Lunar Chronicles
Marissa Meyer

Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison―even though she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive if she does―in this second installment from Marissa Meyer.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana.

SILLY. THIS IS ALL SILLY. 5 stars again? Really? But there is just so much to gush about in this book – even more than in Cinder (inconceivable, I know).

First off, can I say WOLF. Or whatever his name is. SWOON (times infinity). I think I am – no, I KNOW – more taken with him than I ever was with Kai. I’m just like “WOLF take me, take me and never look back. We can be happy, and who cares about Scarlet!?”

Then there is Iko, who is unbearably adorable. She was Cinder’s house android, and basically her best friend since waking up as a cyborg. Iko has a ‘faulty’ personality chip that makes her the belle of the ball (if you ask me). I mean, who WOULDN’T want Iko as a best friend? Also she has a gargantuan crush on Emperor Kai, which she makes known far and wide and its just ohmygoodness I can’t contain it. I definitely laughed out lout because she is so loveable.

So Scarlet. I love that the women in these series are strong and have strong wills. They’re not like, oh I’m a DAMSEL in distress please help me save me noooo. On the contrary. Cinder tries to save Kai (but he is left with no choice than to put himself in jeopardy, and Cinder). Then Cinder’s like oh, I’mma break outta jail and do stuff! And Scarlet’s grandma is missing so she embarks with a stranger (who is glorious Wolf) to find her. Sure, Wolf helps her, but she has got it going on, for real.

Did I mention WOLF? He is the most amazing thing ever, probably.
And the story? It’s as amazing as the characters. 5 stars fully earned. I mean, I’m dying here, I need more stars people! So what are you still doing here? If you have not read these books GO DO IT NOW. I ORDER IT. I DEMAND IT. If you don’t I can’t promise that a crazy wolf man won’t break into your house and rip your throat out.
